Shuga

New ice, composed of spongy white ice lumps, a few inches (centimeters) across. They are formed from grease ice or slush and sometimes from anchor ice rising to the surface. They tend to form is rough seas where pancake ice cannot form, and they resemble slushy snowballs. With the interaction of surface winds and waves, shuga may line up along the wind direction and form characteristic ice bands.
